Diet and Transitions Clinic

Epilepsy Dietary Therapies Clinic

In the Epilepsy Dietary Therapies Clinic, our multi-disciplinary team of physicians and dieticians, works with patients and families to determine if a specialized diet will help lessen severity or eliminate seizures that are difficult to control with medication alone. Additionally, these therapies can be used to treat some metabolic conditions. Various diets such as the ketogenic diet, modified Atkins diet, or low glycemic index therapy will be considered based on specific needs of the patient. These diets focus on manipulating fat to carbohydrate and protein ratios to help as an adjunctive therapy medication to help control seizures.  Our team will work with patients and their families to assist with adjusting to and maintaining a lifestyle on a specialized diet.

Pediatric to Adult Epilepsy Transition Clinic

When epilepsy does not remit in childhood, transition and transfer to adult care is eventually required. Epilepsy may have major effects on normal adolescent development, and societal attitudes can confound this difficult period in the lives of young people with epilepsy. Additionally, poor transition to adult care increases risk of poor social and emotional outcomes, morbidity, and even mortality.  Through our Pediatric to Adult Epilepsy Transition Clinic we address concerns expressed by teens and their parents when shifting from pediatric to adult healthcare services, including fear of the unknown, change in appointment location, loss of established relationships, and anticipated changes in quality of care. The clinic is run by Dr. Vinarsky who is a pediatric neurologist with experience in pediatric and adult Epilepsy. Patients can be referred to the clinic from their pediatric neurologist or by referral.
